What are dentures and braces?
Dental prostheses are used for problems caused by a lack of teeth, and in this way both aesthetic and functional problems (chewing, decay of the remaining teeth) are solved.
Types of dentures
Dentures can be:
- Total dentures (made of acrylic)
- Partial dentures (made of acrylic)
- Skeletonized viseal prostheses
- Fixed prostheses
- Mobile prostheses for straightening teeth
Complete dentures are made when the patient does not have any teeth in the jaw. It is placed over the mucous membrane and jawbone, they are made of acrylate, and after they are made, a period of adaptation is required. It is very important to maintain hygiene when it comes to total dentures. It is recommended to wash them after every meal
Partial dentures are similar in appearance to full dentures except that they contain only the missing teeth. These prostheses are attached to the remaining teeth with special cast hooks, thus preventing the prostheses from falling out. However, this is not exactly the best aesthetic solution because the cast hooks are visible in the mouth.
Skeletonized visil dentures are considered the best dentures. Their base consists of a metal skeleton that gives them strength, and they can use cast hooks or studs as retention elements.
A skeleton prosthesis with cast hooks is used when several teeth need to be replaced. Instead of a large plate that resembles a total prosthesis, a so-called “skeleton” made of metal – includes only as much soft tissue as is necessary. Cast hooks are attached to the teeth and cannot fall out. But despite the cast hooks, this prosthesis is smaller, so patients get used to it much faster.
Attachments are connecting elements and consist of two parts: one part is in the prosthesis and the other part is in a specially made crown. And unlike cast hooks, which are visible, dentures with attachments completely imitate the natural series of teeth because they are invisible.
The dentist covers all the teeth remaining in the jaw with crowns on which special attachments are made. When the prosthesis is made, there are special clips – attachments – on the teeth that are replaced by the prosthesis. They are fastened on the sides of the palate in the upper jaw and the tongue in the lower jaw with those attachments that are cast on the crowns. In this way, the connection between the remaining teeth in the jaw and the teeth that are being replaced by the prosthesis is not visible, thus raising aesthetics to a high level.
Fixed prostheses (braces) are used to correct permanent teeth. The therapy lasts an average of one and a half years. During that time, you need to follow certain rules regarding dental hygiene.
There are two types of fixed prostheses: steel and aesthetic.
Steel fixed braces are standard and are made of metal.
Aesthetic prostheses are chosen by patients who prioritize aesthetics and who are in constant contact with people. There are two types of these prostheses: sapphire glass prostheses and ceramic prostheses.
Mobile dentures for teeth straightening are used in children who have both baby and permanent teeth. This type of prosthesis serves to correct the improper position of the teeth, but also to direct the growth of the jaw bone in the desired direction. Given that these prostheses are intended for children, they are made in colors, with glitter, various applications are added, etc.
